“I called it the Good Luck quilt,” Grace says. “It’s all symbols of luck from across the world, it was a parting gift before the mission - but let’s not get into all that. It’s silly but it’s comforted me through some pretty hard times. I thought…I don’t know. I’m probably just being sentimental.”
Simon grasps the edge of the quilt that he can reach, if only to make sure it’s real. It’s beautiful. There’s not a lot of color left in the world, and colorful, soft fabric of this quality is worth a fortune. The patterns are joyful, almost childish. For some reason that Simon can’t quite articulate through the sickness and exhaustion, it makes him suddenly very certain that this isn’t the COI.
In Simon’s old universe, fabric, thread, and yarn are all precious commodities. He's had to learn to mend clothes and knit socks out of practicality. On Erid, it's a way to pay back what he owes, to make friends, and eventually, to heal.

“Is the alien…dangerous?” he asks slowly.
“No! No, no he’s my friend, he’s - uh, well, the engineer of the Hail Mary,” says Grace. “Look, I’m just saying that - he’s gonna wake up soon, and we don’t need to tell him about how our first meeting went. We can gloss over the whole ‘tackle me to the ground and scare the daylights out of me’ thing. I won’t tell if you won’t.”
Simon is 90% sure this is going to come back to bite him in the form of blackmail but he nods anyways, because it sure as hell sounds like Grace is implying Simon will be allowed to stay a while longer.
Rocky sleeps through the absolute shitshow that is Simon and Grace’s first meeting. It’s probably for the best.
Despite it all, it will be the start of beautiful friendship. -

“There is a civilian with me, she is eight years old and she’s injured - if you won’t come for me, come for her at least,” says Jason, voice breaking.
A bomb goes off with Jason in the building. His comms are only half-broken.

“Can’t afford it,” Geralt grunted.
“It’s not that expensive to rent a bed -” Jaskier started.
It stings to have it pushed in his face that his life isn’t normal, so far beyond normal that someone like Jaskier can’t fathom it.
“It’s expensive to rent a private room,” Geralt couldn’t keep the snarl out of his voice. “Or do you think anyone wants to sleep near a witcher?”
When Geralt meets Jaskier in Posada, he is jaded, bitter and so lonely some days he thinks he might kill him. Jaskier is young, bright, and not afraid of tarnishing his reputation by standing by a witcher.
Years later, Geralt repays the kindness.

I was back to staring straight ahead, because the wall was very interesting right now. I guess I hesitated a beat too long, because Gurathin was nodding his head again, his mouth doing that thing it did when he was disappointed but not surprised. I hated that look.
“No,” I said. “I don’t think so.”
No, I repeated in the feed, though I was less certain that that was true. It did sort of bother me. Who was it? I was tempted to ask. Countless questions fought for attention.
Was this… on the Rim? I asked instead, because that was more vague, but it would answer several questions all at once.
Gurathin huffed a quick laugh. “No.”
Why is that amusing?
He was actively picking at his nails now, looking down at them and everything. The polish was a mess.
You can be pretty unobservant sometimes.

Summary
An unconscious Grace is slowly dying when the Eridians find and rescue Simon. To make matters worse, the laptop with the only translation program is glitching out on Rocky and Adrian as they try to communicate to Simon that he is the only one that can save Grace now. It gets lost in translation that an organ transplant won’t kill Simon in the process— he agrees to do it anyway.
…and then Simon wakes up.

Summary
Grace turns back to the experiment he was supposed to be doing, shaking his head as if to try an disperse the weird feeling from his body. He tucks the emotion to the back of his mind, put away until a later date- preferably when he was alone- to study and categorize and understand better.
For now, he tries not to get distracted by the memory of Simon's laugh, and actually get some work done.
