Written for Riddler Week 2026.
"Riddles were necessary for Edward Nygma in the same way that water was necessary for fish or mayonnaise was necessary for any properly Midwestern fruit and gelatin salad. Riddles weren't just toys to throw at Batman or a clever gimmick to make him stand out from the rest of the tights-and-terrorism crowd. Riddles were the language that he spoke. They were a way to reach above the humdrum static that clogged normal minds and connect with the rare handful of truly exceptional intellects out there (and then dance them to his tune until they admitted that he was, indeed, the smartest man in Gotham City).
Riddles were essential, and Edward Nygma knew the answers. He always, always knew the answers.
