Excerpt from chapter 33:
“So,” Kaz’s voice, a barely-audible rumble, finally disrupted the tension. “What have you learned about her?”
“Why would you think I had learned anything?” Inej whispered, the barest hint of a mischievous smile dimpling her cheek. “Interrogation is your area of expertise if I recall correctly.”
“Oh, I’m sure all you had to do was ask nicely and all those slavers rolled right over, freely spilling their secrets, then?” Kaz needled in response, a knowing twinkle in his eye as he switched his meal for a mug of tea.
Blowing across the top of her bowl, tone transparently ingenuine, Inej scolded, “I did not interrogate the young girl in the basement Kaz.”
“And yet, the question remains,” Kaz purred smugly between sips of hot liquid, “What have you learned about her?”
Conceding tacitly from their playful banter with a sigh, Inej offered, “She calls herself Echo.”
