    Summary

Maybe this isn’t the awful thing it feels like. Perhaps whatever lingers in his blood that overrides his control is something intended to help, to make him better.

The thought doesn’t alleviate any of the terror that still swirls behind his ribcage, threatens to spill over and sink its icy teeth into his bones — but it’s something he clings to, nonetheless. He’ll figure it out, and stop it, and in the meantime it could be a good thing. He hasn’t figured out how to apologise, yet — but the logical first step would be to keep them happy, make sure he stays in their good graces and doesn’t do anything to further aggravate them.

He doesn’t like the idea, but if this — thing, this compulsion helps to make him more palatable, more tolerable and easier to be around, perhaps he’ll be allowed to stay long enough to make it up to them. He might be able to turn it into a good thing before he finds out how to end it, before it wears off. He’ll just wait it out.

    J. Daniel Atlas ends up cursed, he thinks. It takes a while for the others to notice. In the meantime, he tries to stay sane. It's surprisingly difficult when your mind isn't your own, anymore.

    Summary

It’s only because he’s waiting for it, hyper-focused on anything out of the ordinary, anything even the slightest bit off — that he catches it.

Daniel laughs in response to something Martín said, a half-funny joke about profiting off the clients they provide for — and his voice is slightly too breathy, his following remark slightly too slow. It’s nothing overly noticeable, but it’s there — and Merritt grinds his jaw shut as he turns the volume of the radio up and focuses.

It’s barely even there — only years of living with the man, despite the decade of distance between them all, have taught him how to recognise even the slightest differentiation. Daniel’s easy to read, once you get past the snappish remarks and dismissive arrogant air — his breathing is one of his biggest tells. He always speaks as though he’s about to run out of air in seconds, quick and rapid-fire and with an almost desperate undercurrent.

He doesn’t sound like that, now. He sounds wrong.

During a con, Daniel's drink gets laced with a "truth serum"-like drug. It makes for an... enlightening ride back.

    Summary

“How nice of you to volunteer,” Mabry smirks, and the world goes an alarming shade of grey as Dylan watches Daniel get shoved forward, scrabbling uselessly against the hold of the guards. His lungs betray him, breathing picking up more and more, and he strikes out wildly to try and dislodge the guards’ bruising grip.

There’s a dull ache as his fist collides with something solid, and Dylan’s barely aware of himself as he fights back, pulling and scratching at anything within reach. “You won’t get away with this,” he vows, voice dark and furious, the words scraping along the inside of his throat as they’re torn out of him, “I’ll end you for this.”

There’s a shout as the metal door of the safe slams shut, a damning echo clanging along the metal, and a wounded sound escapes from him as Dylan picks up his struggling with renewed energy, grappling in an iron hold that doesn’t let up for even a second. “Don’t do this—”

Dylan and Daniel get captured together at the Taipa marketplace, and Dylan is not the one who ends up in the safe. Tragically, that does not make him feel much better.

So, as he falls, eyes shut against the biting wind, he mutters a plea that someone will catch him before he hits the crashing waves.

No one manages to get to him in time.
