Summary
The engineer takes my hand. His skin runs hot. Very hot. He doesn't let go at what I would gauge as a socially-acceptable handshake time interval. Are we just holding hands in the middle of the lab-workshop space? Guess we are.
"I'm Rocky," he finally introduces himself. He has a hint of an accent, something lilting, melodic. I can't really place it.
"Rocky," I repeat, slowly. "Like the movies?"
"No," Rocky deadpans, giving me a look like I'm stupid. "Like the rocks."

Summary
For as much as I have remembered up until this point, I always thought my life to go the same way it would go for a guy like me: grad school, getting kicked out of the academia, and settling to be a middle school teacher was not too far away from the classic story of a jock who got a knee injury in his mid-twenties and abandoned his sports career to be a gym coach.
I was okay with it, really. To be completely honest, teaching middle schoolers made me, if not better as a person, a little more patient in all aspects of my life. A little.
Then the Project started, and I haven’t had peace ever since. Every experience was either the best moment of my overall boring life, or one of the most horrible things that could happen to a person.
I survived it all, of course, often through the sheer power of ‘do it scared and complaining’ and against all odds, the ‘i-don’t-want-to-die’-guy that I am.For the last 24 hours, though, I wished for nothing but to be put out of my misery.

Summary
It was an accident the first time.
(One could argue that it wasn't even an accident the first time. Grace could argue this, and he would argue this, probably questioning, how does someone masturbate accidentally??? To which Rocky would then point to Portable Earth Thinking Machine and bring up the many definitions of the very word accident—one being "lack of intention or necessity," which is what Rocky means in this particular case.)
…admittedly, it doesn't quite work. Rocky didn't start pleasuring himself accidentally after all—that was very intentional, as much as he'd hate to admit it, but he'd rather jump out of Mary's airlock than explain that to Grace.
So no, not quite an accident. Not exactly the word that fits this peculiar situation he's gotten himself into.
Rocky just didn't intend for it to go this far.

"He's tapping his fingers together again. I know what he's thinking. He's thinking what I am thinking. But if either of us is going to say it, it's gotta be him. 'If it came down to it, I would be completely fine with you performing an invasive surgery on me', is something that would take possibly three more near-death experiences and another coma to grant me the resolve to say aloud."

Summary
The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.
Used.
The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”

“Would it help––should I bring my dinner in too?” Grace jokes, smiling in preparation for the absolute symphony of disgusted whistles he knows Rocky will produce at the thought of them doing something as depraved as sharing a meal. “I’ve been saving this week’s half packet of ramen for just such an occasion––”
[YES YES YES!] Rocky’s translator app suddenly blares from the laptop on the floor between them. [YES, ACCEPT ACCEPT ACCEPT! GRACE RAMEN ♪♫♪♫ WITH ROCKY, AFFIRMATIVE! GRACE ROCKY EAT ♪♫♪♫ MEAL TOGETHER AFFIRMATIVE YES YES AFFIRMATIVE NOW.]

And then what if you accidentally proposed marriage to said alien best bud without knowing, because while you may be Earth's best and brightest, you are also notoriously inexperienced and kinda stupid at close interpersonal relationships? “Have your way with me?” grins Grace. “Put your claws alllll over me? Claim me as part of your booty?”
Rocky reaches down and flicks him. “Grace make sound so stupid. Promise: is not stupid. Could be fun! Grace show me around ship, ready to do anything to convince me to let go free. Maybe Grace even show me own body."
“Oooooh, and then you could be like: ‘I’ll let you go, but since you’re the only human I’ll ever meet, I have to study you. Experiment on you. For the sake of interstellar biology.’”

Summary
Rocky states his proposal as soon as Grace has one foot in the ladder, and Grace misses the next rung and almost cracks his head against the side of his bed in shock.
There is no way Rocky had actually said what Grace thought he heard, just now. “You…you want to what? For science?!”
Rocky tsks, like Grace has taken the implications way out of proportion. “Experiment,” he stresses. “Logical, methodical experiment. You make it sound… unreasonable.”
Grace explodes. “Unreasonable! Unreasonable! You want to stick your hand up my ass!”

“Proof of concept,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. “We’ve tested it thoroughly to ensure it fits the specified nutritional profile, and several members of our team have ingested small amounts of it to ensure there were no adverse effects.”
“You ate some of it?” I ask, rudely. I’m too irate to mind my language. Who do they think they are? That meat is for Grace. In a way, that meat is Grace.
“Yes,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. They and the rest of the human life support thrum know better than to be offended by my occasionally strange behaviour. “Obviously we weren’t going to risk the life of Honoured Grace on a completely untested technology.”
That doesn’t mean much. There’s a lot of things that are safe for ingestion by Eridians that would outright kill a human.
Trust Grace, I remind myself. He’ll have thought of all this.

Summary
If Rocky propositions him during the workday, he makes no such attempt at a performance—or, as Rocky likes to call it, courtship.
After they determine this is indeed the word Rocky’s using, Grace snorts. “No. Courtship is, like, old-fashioned dating. Very formal old-fashioned dating.”
“No, no.” Rocky gestures to what he gave Grace. “Is courtship. Trust.”
“I don’t know what this is, but it’s not courtship!” Grace holds up the honest-to-God padded handcuffs Rocky made for him. They jingle a little. “Explain how this is old-fashioned to you. Quickly.”

Summary
Eridians show affection mostly through singing, or by making gifts. Rocky has always found it an easy, uncomplicated way to express his feelings.
Human affection is neither easy nor uncomplicated, he quickly discovers. It’s full of strange customs, involves a lot of touching and is, sometimes, worryingly violent.

Summary
"Grace's body is alive despite every detail telling Rocky otherwise. His human is a cold and wet thing, yet there are biological pumps within his body that shuttle around heated blood no differently than in an Eridian. Rocky knows the blood within him is hot because he can hear its vibration, a static hum that accompanies all that produces heat. But what Rocky wants nothing more is to press his palms against Grace until he can feel it, that scant heat, that proof that he is in fact alive."

"Why don't you?" Lewis asks.
They're eating sandwiches on a bench outside the Ashmolean. The sky is a clear, cold blue. Lewis's question appears to have emerged directly from it and dropped into James' lap without a parachute.
"I considered it, sir, but once you turn down MI-5, I don't think they're too keen on you changing your mind."
Lewis knocks his shoulder into James' in reprimand. "Go into academia, I mean. Teach or something."
James looks down at his ham sandwich and back up at Lewis. "And leave all this?"

James Hathaway often thought that at his christening he must have been cursed, by an underhanded and satirical fairy, with the twin blessings of an excellent memory and an inability to run away from his past.
Written for Lysimache in the 2012 Lewis Secret Santa at the lewis_challenge LJ comm. Rated for some long-awaited sex and a few bad words, overwhelmed by ridiculous amounts of literary allusion and exploratory metaphor.

“Celebrating?” the server asks as she sets plates down on the table.
“Aye, you could say that I suppose.” Robbie isn’t sure what makes pints and fish and chips, or Hathaway’s salad look festive, but the end of this slog of a case, in combination with the gorgeous weather, has put them both in a fine mood. James is positively chipper.
