Summary
After six years at PTMC, Shen has found that the majority of rumours spread are inflated or entirely inaccurate. 25% have some kernel of truth to them, about 13% are pretty accurate, give or take a fact or two, and 2% or less are completely, fully correct.
The 2% is rarely enough to justify the time needed to listen to the other 98%. Chasing the 2%, Shen’s found, is what lands him in the shit. Chasing the 2% is how he ended up working three doubles in the same week. Chasing the 2% is how he ended up on a blind date with a woman named Alex who worked in data science, and then he had to come out to the entire Obstetrics department on a Tuesday. Chasing the 2% is how he got his third concussion and also stabbed.
Shen’s second year of residency had been an experience he doesn’t want to repeat, so these days, Shen doesn’t allow himself to participate in gossip. Unfortunately for him, the people he works with are absolute fiends for the stuff.

And then there was John. Dr John Shen, who at first glance looked to be entirely too nonchalant to work in the ER. Dr John Shen, who always carried around an iced coffee from Dunkin’, who was calm and relaxed in the most extreme situations, who soothed patients’ worries with only his words, and who was unfairly handsome. He had introduced himself to Dennis on his first day of night shift with a honeyed voice, a small smile on his face and the reassurance that it really was okay to call him John, not Dr Shen. ‘None of that formality nonsense, we are all equals here in the Pitt.’ And that was that.

Dr Dennis Whitaker had been on night shift for two weeks, and the crush he harboured for his attending was only getting worse. How was he going to make it through the next few months of his mandatory night shift rotation? He thinks very little about the night of the assault. He thinks far too much about the morning after, about Robby’s hand on his wrist, Robby’s arm around his shoulder, Robby’s mouth against his hair, Robby’s fingers sliding a needle into his vein.

Summary
