Summary
Alexandra Hathaway is a child of war. Smuggled out of Germany to England, she is arranged to live with her uncle, Nathaniel, and his wife, Dorothea. However, it is revealed that her uncle (a doctor) and his wife (a nurse) have died from tuberculosis. Due to her uncle’s friendship with Rev. Reginald Wakefield, he takes her in temporarily, until Frank Randall (another friend of her uncle’s) encounters her. Utterly charmed by the intelligent four-year-old child, and bitterly lonely because of his wife, Claire’s, disappearance, he takes her in...
One year later, Claire returns, and the three of them move to Boston. Claire gives birth to Brianna while there, and, in short order, Alexandra is adopted, thus becoming a Randall herself. As the years stretch on, Alexandra begins to realize that her parents’ relationship is not at all harmonious, though she keeps this knowledge under wraps to protect her younger sister. When Frank passes away, they take Brianna to England, and then to Scotland, after the reverend passes away. Finally, the truth, as they say, will out, leading the three women on the journey of a lifetime, where love is paramount.

I was startled to read Dragonfly in Amber and find no reference to Frank’s role in bringing Claire and Jamie together. Though Claire begged for his life when she asked Jamie to spare Black Jack’s life for a year, she never explained that wiping Frank from existence might have dire consequences for her, and therefore, for Jamie. Here is a possible alternate version of events. You will recognize the opening paragraphs as direct quotes from Chapter 21 of DIA.
