Summary
It would, however, almost get to feel easy, for a time, to stand in the perfect drape of shadow in that beautiful room. Simple. In the dark. Her up there on the stage, him craning his neck to see around the pillar. The world a wonderful thing.
He could even forget why he was there, the same way the politicians and the mobsters and the waitstaff did. Good men, bad men, it wouldn’t matter.
In the dark with her there was no time. No space. Nothing to worry about and nothing to wait for.
He could almost be some kind of man whose foundations weren’t crumbling a little more each day.
This would, much later, be part of why Flint would run. Eventually even the forgetting wouldn’t last. Eventually it would hurt.
(AKA Six months is a short amount of time to fall in love, but a long amount of time for Flint Marko to be collapsing in on himself).

Summary
You take things from persons who get in your way. You knock birthday cakes from the hands of people at crosswalks. You dump whole cups of lollipops that should be given to children at banks into your pocket. You kick dogs when they show you their bellies. You ruin things and laugh and it goes without saying that you’ve killed a great deal of people.
If not directly, then by association. By coincidence. You can’t seem to stop, so now it’s a choice.
You’re an expert in your field. You don’t believe in ghosts.
If the other side really existed, and if everyone whose deaths you had a hand in really got to take a number to demand their pound of flesh or see their business finished, you’d croak from old age yourself before they all got their long winded speeches and curses out of the way (to say nothing of their actual vengeance).
Jacques Snicket, tonight, is simply the latest addition to a long line.
Or, at least, he was.
It figures that, of all the candidates for your personal haunting, only the most sanctimonious bastard would show up for the job.

Summary
“As you slept, oh, was it terrible?” It must have been. A curse, to sleep like death. Another pocket. Another nightmare. She didn’t want to know even as she had to ask. The fate that had waited for her in plain sight. That he’d blundered into, always reaching out for her.
Being beautiful did nothing to sway the nature of the news, as this new cousin of hers could only shake her winsome head. A smile that was too soft and sweet for how distant her eyes were. “No, not so terrible. I was just dancing, you see? Dancing and dancing and dancing.”
From the look on her face, the tender way she picked at a spindle-struck streak of red that split the nail of that lovely cursed hand permanently, it was a place she returned each night. A struggle, marvelous and wretched, to wake from it at dawn. “I’d have never even thought to come down from that dream on my own.”
The next question was so obvious, it might as well have been a blessing she’d received young. Something long fated.
"How do I wake him?”
Even in his deepest dreams, there is no other night he would revisit. No other partner than her.

Summary
Most people would have learned of their partner’s disappearance, heading out into the field, via a note. A telegram sent to a local office. Perhaps an off-handed, nearly forgotten, reminder at the next meeting after they’d spent weeks in distress assuming the worst. Betrayal. Barbarity. Bereavement.
Most people didn’t get Kit Snicket, standing in their kitchen, being precious about their feelings. Reaching into one of the many deep pockets in her coat, rifling about for something, and waiting until she found whatever it was to answer. Leaving Olivia and the percolator in one last moment of invaluable anticipation.
“Four months,” Kit finally said, leaning against the counter, with a frankness that showed exactly how little she approved of such things herself. The coffeemaker, having completed its task, chose that precise moment to fall into silence as if mutually shocked by the news. “He’s undercover. Here, if you’ll believe it...but he will write.”

Summary
Ella Ashmore, undeniably, was dead. He wouldn’t live in denial of such a thing. It wouldn’t be useful.
Her life had ended.
And yet she wore pearls in her hair, now, and crowns of feathery green stone.
She was wrapped in fine gowns by girls who discreetly rubbed their palms together as they walked up a great many stairs to her chambers each morning so as to avoid her discomfort.
She smiled with a practiced ease and spoke cleanly and crisply from atop her gilded throne. She had all her teeth (and no new ones) which remained only as sharp as they’d been before (which wasn’t all that much).
Sometimes, she had him check. Had him count as she tipped her head back. Had him swear on his name as to whether anything looked any different. It hadn’t in all the times he’d checked but he never rolled his eyes at her request.
(AKA Ella Ashmore was only mostly dead...and of all people Tadius is, surprising nobody, pretty okay with that).

A compilation of drabbles regarding how I can make Tadius even more highly strung if I make him a werewolf first.
But also have you ever considered how Ella Ashmore was homegrown to be the ultimate 'chill with having a monster bf' protagonist once she gets over the fact that you didn't mention being a werewolf when you first met her?

Summary
Years ago, the Midnight Crew were the terror of the Eastern Seaboard. It wasn't an easy life, being English's archenemies, with all the other gangs on their asses half the time and the Feds the other half, but Droog wouldn't have traded it for anything in the god damn world.
Then they got old, and they had kids relying on them.
Nowadays things are pretty quiet, most of the time. English has been dead for years, the Felt cut down in the last gang war, all but the ones who were civilized enough to make a peace with. Crime made them rich enough to live out their days, and they've squirreled themselves and their money and their kids away in Middle America where the Feds will never find them. Not that easy, of course. A life of crime and violence doesn't really prepare you for raising kids, or for how exactly to deal with people who don't think you deserve to exist when you can't hit back without drawing attention to yourselves.
But all things considered, it's a pretty good life.
