Summary
Viktor barely just managed to set his glass down, passing his flinch as a tremor of the hands. Jayce did not mean the words in any way but friendly jest, perhaps even concern—Viktor was hardly the paragon of health; and there was surely talk of his nonexistent prospects. Besides, Jayce did not know any ill-will could be involved in such an innocuous sentiment.
The worst of his cruelty, after all, was unintentional.
“I have no constitution for marriage,” Viktor said, swallowing the bile.

Three years ago, Piltover exiled its golden boy for the crime of studying magic. Now Jayce Talis fixes what Zaun breaks at the bottom of an alley, grease worked permanently under his nails, a beard grown in over the pristine face his city used to want — and every night, in a cellar beneath the floor, he builds the things they forbade him.
He does not mean to build a person. It happens anyway, on a night of bad weather, in a bloom of stolen light: a slender machine of steel and bronze who opens two golden eyes, looks down at Jayce’s bleeding hand, and observes, with great concern, “You are leaking.”

Could it have worked? he wondered, not the first time. Could it really have invoked magic?
Viktor stroked his hand over the notebook, fingers tracing the Talis family sigil. Tracing the strong lines of the hammer embossed on the front cover. He felt, not for the first time that day, responsible.
"Professor? Do you think..." his voice faltered, the breath escaping his lungs in a defeated huff. "Do you think...if I'd gone to him last night, Jayce wouldn't have...do you think I could have..."
Could I have stopped him? Could I have saved him? Is this my fault?
"Viktor, my boy. You must not blame yourself. We may never know why Jayce did what he did. There was nothing you could have done." Professor Heimerdinger said.
And yet, Viktor wasn't assured by those words. If he had just come to him earlier, if he hadn't waited for the morning...would Jayce be standing here right now? Was this all his fault?
In a timeline where Viktor hadn't been there to stop Jayce from jumping, Viktor is gripped with grief and guilt over the death of the brilliant young man he never got the chance to know. In Jayce's place, he becomes determined to get Hextech working. He owes Jayce that much.

“Good morning,” said the man from the speaker. “Can I speak with Jayci Talis?”
“Jayce speaking,” he corrected, annoyed. The man had a thick accent, a kind of voice trained to be smooth, a customer service voice.
He managed to close his door and went down the stairs, his hands full of his last packed box, ready to move out.
“Oh, hi. Hello. I’m sorry to bother you so early, it was very... hard to find your contact.”
He kept the phone on his shoulder as he got closer to his car, struggling to find the keys.
“Sorry, this is not a good time, who is it?” Jayce pressed, wanting to get to the point.
“Uh... I’m the...” he heard a sigh from the other side, he couldn’t deal with this, not at this time. He was about to hang out when the voice continued. “I’m the organ recipient. Of your friend.” A pause. “It’s Viktor.”
He heard as his box of shit hit the ground, unable to do anything about it.

In which Jayce can't properly deal with death itself, and Viktor has to get used to his new heart and everything that comes with it.

Summary
There were too many “ifs” and “buts” and it wasn’t about to get easier. It felt like he had already missed something very important and it was impossible to try to understand anything now. Viktor made him reach an impasse. It was like Hextech was beyond his understanding or he himself was on the verge of collapse. Heimerdinger told him about the difficulties of working with an unexplored component like this, not to mention integrating it to the existing computer systems.
Talis wasn’t afraid of the impossible. He was afraid of making this world even worse.

“… incinerated my prototypes,” he is saying as Viktor watches him; half-conversational, half-explanatory. “A few times, actually, by now. It’s like cat and mouse: I make them, they incinerate them … I don’t think they ever realised I had any other crystals or they’d definitely incinerate those, too.”
“Bastards,” Viktor says, seriously.
Jayce grins up at him again. “Yeah,” he says, “bastards. The whole lot.”
They look at each other oddly, both blinking. Then Jayce grins again, as though he is in on some sort of great joke that only the two of them are privy to. For the first time in a very long time, Viktor feels very aware of his mask standing between the world an his face.
Perhaps the cooling system is clogged again. He feels oddly warm.
Or: Zaunite shut-in Viktor hides in his lab and behind his mask, until a tipsy Academy drop-out stumbles into his life on a reckless gander into the Undercity. Something blooms.

The distant look in the Mage’s eyes snapped to the gap of the roof, to the near-silent tuttering of other, watchful machines down below. “No, it doesn’t matter. You will be safe up here. It should be simple enough, to lay protective wards into the earth of the tower. I won’t let anything happen to you,” he vowed.
Promises held no impetus in this world, where nothing happened, nothing changed.
The Machine reset its position on its knees and replaced its hands on the weapon of a fallen era. I can’t stop you from making useless promises, can I?
Somehow, without doing anything, the Machine had gained a visitor and protector.
