Summary
For as long as Tails could remember, it was the two of them against the world. Sonic and Tails, best friends and brothers by bond, if not by blood. There’d never been any doubt in his mind that they were on the same page. Nothing was ever going to come between them. It was a fact, and Tails had more than enough data to back it up.
What he didn’t consider, however, were the conditions they lived in when he’d drawn that first conclusion. When it was just the two of them living on their own, constantly on the move. Of course they were each other’s best friends. They were all they had in the world aside from a few meager camping supplies and Sonic’s plane.
But that wasn’t the case anymore. Stuck in one place, they had more opportunities to spend time with their friends and to make new ones. More than Tails could ever remember having at one time. Turns out learning to adapt to change is a guaranteed constant in life.
Tails wished he’d been given the memo sooner; then maybe he’d have had more time to prepare.
As their friend group expands to include both Cream and Charmy, Tails has to learn to share his big brother's attention with the younger kids. Spoiler alert: he isn't very good at it.

Summary
He rubbed one of his eyes sluggishly, pushing himself back to his previous place. His eyes were ready to stare again before he noticed a movement out of the corner of his eyes. The kit turned his head towards it and he wished he didn’t.
His breath hitched for a second before he pulled himself against the desk far away from what his brain concluded was a threat to his very being. The kit grabbed a wrench from his discarded tool pile right beside his computer as the electronic kept sending pings.
The fox pointed it towards his enemy as some sort of weapon he was willing to threaten it with. The creature stayed still, staring at the owner of the long stick that had a curve in front.
The kit gulped silently as he very slowly pulled up the wrist that was wearing his communicator, never tearing his eyes away from the menace. He juggled the wrench with the communicator until the tech and the tool were balanced in his hold, a free finger to swipe as it pleased on the glass.
