The seconds stretch. Her confidence evaporates with alarming speed. What had seemed perfectly reasonable inside her own head suddenly sounds mortifying spoken aloud. The hand which had been resting on the table between them swung wide and knocked his cup, splashing tea; he scrambled to save it before it hit the floor and shattered, and there was about three seconds of mad grabbing and clanging before Yan Zheng finally stabilised himself, setting the cup down with a faintly trembling hand. When he looked up, his face was a rosy pink beneath the candlelight, and little wisps of hair had escaped his topknot, falling loose over his cheeks. “What?”
