It'll be night already in Iraq, wherever they are. Wherever Rudy is.
Pappy's tried to fight the 'what-ifs' every time they'd crept up on him (which seemed like all the time), but in this moment, he lets them in.
He wonders if everyone is fine, if they got through the next shithole town or went around it. He thinks about the damage to his (no, not his anymore, their) vehicle, if they've tried to fix anything or even had the time to do so. He hopes Rudy doesn't have to go through the rest of the invasion with a bullet hole through the windshield, though he knows the other man would find some bullshit excuse or karmic lesson for why it's a good reminder of fleeting mortality or some other West Coast preachy thing.
Pappy wonders if his blood still stains the floorboards of the Humvee. The imagery of it, of Rudy having to clean it off himself, grips something fragile and fluttering in his chest, tightening up around his throat and not letting go.

Each time they'd done drownproofing exercises in the pool, Colbert had been the one to tie his hands and feet together. Watching the other instructors, it's clear to Nate he was going out of his way to do so. And the sections of black cording were always very tight. Swimming handicapped back and forth in the pool, Colbert had always been there, looming over the edge, watching him like a hawk. Maybe more akin to a heron, truthfully.

"Are you skipping rations when it's bad?" he asked slowly as a horrible thought occurred to him.
"Yeah. Unfortunately nobody's figured out any anti-emetics for vampires." Harry shrugged. "Hold on, I don't like that look," he added, peering up at him closely.
"How much would you need to make up for the deficit?"
"No," Harry interjected immediately. "No, Johnny. Are you insane? They'll hit us both with a court martial!"

The year is 2282 and the world hasn't improved any in the last six-odd months. In fact, Caesar's Legion is starting to encroach on the Mojave and all the locals are getting nervous about what's to come, caught between the Legion and the New California Republic's forces.
Nate and Brad are more concerned about immediate problems, like Nate's new courier business and Brad's new hobby of exterminating all the deathclaws between Mathilda and Sloan, but sooner or later, people will have to decide whether to stay or go.
