They can do that for hours, if there’s something making them nervous. They tuck themselves away where they can’t be found, and peek out at the world until they feel safe again.
(OR: The crew make a pit-stop at the inn. Ed seems troubled. Archie's there for a 'talk it through' moment. Ed/Stede fluff and developing Ed & Archie being besties, with background crew shenanigans.)

“I’m sorry, darling. I didn’t know,” he sighed, and stroked beneath Ed’s eye with the pad of his thumb. It felt so nice that he closed his eyes, felt the anger begin to bubble away. “Why didn’t you say? We did a lot today, you must be exhausted.”
“Because it’s stupid,” Ed huffed out. “I’m a fucking old man, I shouldn’t have problem sleeping.”
Stede kissed his cheek that time. “First of all, you aren’t old,” he spoke softly. “And it’s not stupid, lots of people have problems sleeping, love,” Ed opened his eyes again to look at him, and Stede’s expression was so soft it made him melt. “I’m sorry you’ve been dealing with this.”
Ed huffed, gripped onto the material of Stede’s nightgown. “Its fucking annoying, god I just want some fucking sleep, but if I go lay down now I’ll be laying there for fucking hours and I won’t-”
“Hey,” Stede tapped his jaw lightly to refocus his attention. “I think you’re a little too high strung to try to sleep,” he leaned in to kiss him again, and didn’t pull away much to continue speaking. “Why don’t we help you relax, hm?”

Ed and Stede have been together for months but are yet to consummate their relationship, and not through lack of trying. The problem is that every time they get close, Stede tenses up. And he wants things to go further, he really does, but with his only frame of reference for intimacy being his loveless marriage with Mary and never knowing what it is to be desired until he met Ed, Stede feels self-conscious. The thought of Ed seeing him naked or touching him intimately sends him into a panic about not being good enough, and how are they ever supposed to be intimate when Stede struggles with that?
Luckily, Ed has a creative solution.

Eventually Stede just left the house in the middle of it all. He remembers Ed calling after him. “Stede- Stede! Don’t fucking run away from me again-” But before he knew it, he was already outside and walking down the dirt road to sit down. That was about an hour ago. The sun is disappearing over the horizon now, and Stede is mentally figuring out where he can stay for the night.
There’s no way Ed wants him back into their home. Not at this rate.

Stede and Ed just had their first major fight as a couple. This is the aftermath.

Summary
When they get back to the ship, Stede asks Ed to wait in the dinghy and climbs up the ladder to ask the crew if Ed can stay. Ed waits. He hadn’t really expected to get this far anyways. He certainly hadn’t expected Stede to follow him off the ship, or invite him back, or talk to the crew on his behalf. In between the gentle slap of the waves against the hull of the ship, he can hear that conversation happening above him, a quiet muttering that sits just on the edge of his hearing.
He should probably care about what they’re saying, should probably hoist himself up the ladder a bit to suss out who’s in favor and who’s against, determine what kind of situation he’s facing by climbing right back on board with the crew that had just mutinied against him, calculate his odds of surviving through the night. He should probably do all of that.
It sounds exhausting.
Ed gets back on the Revenge and everything that's happened in the last few days catches up to him. Stede does his best to help him through it.

“No, no, this is different,” Lucius said. “Look, he got stabbed, right? He nearly died. When I went in to check on him he was lying in bed half dressed and Blackbeard was sitting next to him staring at his chest.”
“He probably just knows a lot about medicine,” Pete said.
“What, tit medicine?” Lucius asked. He could hear the edge of hysteria in his voice.
“No, like, he was looking for signs of infection by counting Captain’s breaths,” Pete said. “Or something.”
“That is not a thing,” Roach said.
Lucius thinks there's something going on between Blackbeard and Captain Bonnet. The rest of the crew think that he's lost his mind.

Summary
When the door slams open again, Stede’s standing in the doorway. The rival captain’s body is slumped in the hallway just behind him, Stede’s dagger still buried to the hilt in his throat, his blood marking up the sleeve of Stede’s white shirt.
Ed has just enough time to feel relief before Stede’s expression flickers to horror and oh.
Oh, Stede.
“I’m okay,” Ed says immediately. “It’s okay. I promise, everything’s fine, I’m fine—”
“Ed,” Stede croaks, already halfway to wrecked, and guilt crashes over Ed like a wave.

It’s not Ed’s first time getting kidnapped and tortured. However, it is Stede’s first time rescuing him in the aftermath.
It’s unexplored territory for them both.

Thanks to a post from @burymyvices, I’ve been thinking tonight about Stede discovering that Ed did not just “happen upon” that Spanish vessel but had in fact been following Stede for weeks. This is just a silly little drabble about that. Written hastily, not beta'd.

Summary
There are some times when Stede is stopped in his tracks in sheer awe and adoration of his co-captain. Times when he commits the vision of Edward into core memory, so he can have it forever, or as long as his mind will allow.
When a small raid goes south and Stede is held captive aboard another vessel, he's grateful he has little snippets of Edward to rely on to get him through the ordeal.
He's even able to capture a few more moments and lock them away in his mind when his knight in black leather arrives.

“The crew’s sort of worried about me,” Lucius asks, “aren’t they?” He nestles his head in the crook of Pete’s throat and shoulder. “It’s sort of funny, don’t you think?”
“I think they’re really worried about you,” Pete points out. “I think you got stabbed and they’re really freaking out, probably. Because that’s kind of a really scary thing, and everybody really loves you here, and they don’t want anything to happen to you.” He hesitates, then adds, “I— I think.”
Lucius lifts his head just enough to meet Pete’s eyes. Apparently he likes what he finds there, because he says, “Aw,” and kisses him on the chin before nuzzling back into him, holding him tighter, closer, pulling Pete’s arms around him.
