Virgil has dark magic. Or must. Certainly all the normal magic won't work for him. He can't even find a familiar. Until he finally manages to make a deal with a fairy named Logan. Logan won't be his familiar, but he'll still hang around and be his teacher. And that's plenty enough for Virgil.
Roman wants to be a knight! To wipe all the darkness and evil from the land! To save the poor people under oppression! And his first rescue is a fairy named Patton.
But perhaps things aren't as simple as they think.

“You have to hide first,” Patton explained, and then, because he was being rude not introducing himself: “And I’m Patton! I can be the one who hides this first time if you’ll hide next time.”
He faltered before he could say anything else. The boy’s eyes had suddenly gone wide and dark, cold wind sweeping through the playground and stirring the edges of soggy, browned leaves into the air; Patton shuddered and touched the other boy’s arm to see if he was distracted or something, and his new playmate’s gaze snapped back toward him.
“Patton,” he said, sounding wondering and weird, almost shaking.
“That’s me!” Patton agreed. “Who’re you?”
“You know who I am,” the boy said, strange expression falling back into irritated confusion.

Here are some facts: All forests are connected. Some stories demand sacrifices. Nature has the strangest tendency towards uncanny symmetry. And none of the Sides are really prepared for a musical, magical, high-fantasy rescue mission, but it looks like that's what they're going to have to do anyway.
That is to say - Thomas seems to have been kidnapped by fairies.
Someone should really do something about that.

Years (how many, exactly? He’d probably never know) later, the mere thought that he could fool a Fae seemed laughable to him. His masters were just too powerful.

Summary
Janus is allowed to participate in the group, and that is more than enough for them. Almost thirty years of basically not existing right into being able to do their goddamn job at long last? Not too bad of a change up, really, and they aren't going to complain about it any time soon. Patton, however, insists on throwing a wrench into their system- their perfectly functioning, if maybe hypothetically a bit lonely, system. They wished they could be more angry about it than they were.
(In which Janus is accepted, has an identity crisis, and fumbles their way through growth and trust, all the while not nearly as alone as they'd like to convince themself they are.)
