She doesn't realize that she's sobbing until she has to scrub a hand over her eyes so she can see. Riza is already getting back to her feet, wobbly from the adrenaline and fear, when a hand pats her leg. It's Berthold, looking up at her solemnly. 'Nothing can fix this', his eyes say, though it's only a trickle of blood that comes out of his mouth, trailing down his chin.
She jerks away from his touch, arms wrapped tightly around her own chest. “I'll be back soon, I promise.”

He stared at his hands and didn't feel sad. It was hard to explain. He just felt—absent. A little removed. Like he wasn't quite there. Like he wasn't fully tethered to his body.
That was the thing about his life. So much of it had already happened, and he hadn't been there for it.

Summary
Dogs were once wolves. Transformed over time by heavy Hylian hands, domestication blunted their fangs and soothed their wild nature. They became docile, and unwilling to speak out. Wild wasn't a dog, but that didn't mean the metaphor affected him any less. After a lifetime of servitude and silence, it was only natural that his sharp edges had been smoothed, his spirit dimmed.
Eight other heroes won't change his life so quick, but they can certainly nudge him in the right direction.
Or, another chain meets Wild fic, but Wild is much less 'wild'.

It yanked Link’s head up by his hair and pried open his mouth. Link fought, but nothing he could do would let him escape the Lynel's firm grasp. It forced the thick contents of the bottle down Link’s throat.
Link choked, instinctively gagging on the searing liquid. Pain shot through his body as he spasmed, his limbs shaking. He wanted to scream, or throw up, or do anything to get the substance out of his body. He could feel it sitting in his stomach and stewing there, sending out jabs of pain that overcame his body as he started to hyperventilate in the Lynel's grasp.
It tossed him to the floor and he landed face first into the grass.
