“What?” the other man asks, wiping the smear of flour of his cheek. He examines his hand, frowns, looks back up. “Did I miss a patch?”
“No,” Jon says, despite there being flour all over Martin’s apron, a bit on the tip of his nose, and a healthy smattering in his hair. Something about Martin in the kitchen covered in flour makes his heart squeeze. Just like this, he thinks, the same way a desperate, brokenly in love man would. Let us stay just like this. His eyes catch back on his hair, looking at the flecks in the roots, the spark of orange that has started to nestle among the black and shock of white (a blessing from the Lonely, because unfortunately, most things that love Martin are not the most kind to him). He wants to run his hands through his hair. He wants to ask about the color. Is it natural? Is it new? Is it Martin’s original color? He wants to know, wants the knowledge inside his head and next to his heart, filling up his chest, and for that reason he cannot ask in good conscience. He cannot ask and still know for certain that the answers are given voluntarily.

The strings wrapped him in their web, starting from his chest and twisting and fluttering around him.
There were friends at the ends of these strings, Mr. Spider had told him as a child. He just had to follow the strings where they lead.
There were victims at the ends of these strings, The Mother had told him. They would be delicious.With curiosity, Jon reached out and let the bright red string curl around his finger freely. The most beautiful, he thought. It tightened around him. In response, Jon gave it a gentle tug.
Instantly, his vision was overtaken.
Tea, made perfectly with milk and a dash of sugar and a lot of love. A deep, deep loneliness. A lie on a resume. White fog, dusty shelves full of documents, a sound like wet pasta. Fear, fear, fear. Jon’s face, all eight of his eyes open, gazing sharply at something behind him.
Love, love, love. So much love.
A gunshot.
“Martin!” Jon gasped, coming to. “Who the hell is Martin?”
Or:
Jon doesn't escape Mr. Spider, and becomes a child avatar of the Web. This changes some things, but not others.

Summary
This was getting too out of the ordinary for Jon. Everything would be easier if they could just keep ignoring each other, like normal people did. He began to turn away. "Er, yeah. Anyways. Bye. See you in class."
Martin smiled at him so warmly it could have melted a castle of ice. His round cheeks formed little dimples. "Bye, Jon!"
Words. Why did words not work right and his face feel like it was shaped wrong when someone looked at him like that? It made him angry and embarrassed and a half dozen other emotions he wasn't ready to identify.
And why did it have to be someone as dull and bothersome as Martin, of all people, to make him feel this way?

Martin blushed at the misunderstanding. He kicked off his shoes, hurried his legs up onto the bed, and scooched over to join him under the covers.
“Right, of course. I’m here. I've got you.”

Long after they arrive Somewhere Else, Jon is laid up in bed suffering from the consequences of being dethroned as Pupil of the Eye, and gets thoroughly snuggled about it. Martin manages to say a few words about his own feelings and fears, and also gets snuggled.

Summary
After dying to Martin's hand in the Panopticon, The Archivist floats in between space and time, the Beholding keeping him company, traveling to wherever the fears decide to make their home next. Turns out, they choose a parallel world to Jon's previous one. Jon flies into his past self's desk at high speeds and makes his entrance into this world as dramatic and mysterious as possible, in classic Jonathan Sims style. Now, the Archivist must figure out how to stop the oncoming apocalypse in this world. (And figure out how to handle the oncoming office shenanigans.)
