It is July 4th, 2046, and for the first time in twenty years, Dennis Whitaker comes in for his day shift. While he navigates through the chaotic holiday, he struggles to cope with the lingering grief of his late mentor, Michael Robinavitch, who committed suicide on this date two decades ago. The next day, it is early spring of 2026, about three months before his death. In confusion, Dennis looks in the mirror to see an unaged version of himself and takes the opportunity to try to convince Robby out of his “sabbatical” planned for July.

The day Robby was supposed to leave for his sabbatical, Jack gets a call. It's Robby.
“Robby what is it? What's going on?" Abbot says, his heart now racing, hands shaking.
Robby’s voice breaks, he sounds timid, scared. “Y-, You, You said to call”
Everything stops.
“If it gets dark, you call me.”
The words he had said only 2 days ago. The words he said to Robby as an effort, a hand to reach out and tell Robby he knew he couldn't handle this. To remind Robby that he had a lifeline.

Summary

"Have you ever been in love before?"
It's not a question he expects and he blinks as if a headlight had just flashed at him. Yet immediately, his voice answers without his permission, strong with certainty.
"No," He states, the easy authority of the ER leaking into his words, "Not in love...yeah, not properly,"
She continues on but Robby's mind is suddenly hijacked for the second time that day. He almost flinches with the image, like he's been jabbed with a needle out of nowhere - a mess of curls the colour of burnt gold and a voice that sounds like cigarette smoke and the empty halls of an ER in 1999.
"Did you know the back of your neck goes red when you lie, Robinavitch?"
