    “You….You’re laughing?”

Nicholas almost chokes on it; the warmth that drips languidly from Vash’s parted mouth like honey between his fingers. Vash’s wide eyes find Nicholas’s own, the deepest ocean blue meeting whiskey brown, and Nicholas can’t help but feel entirely undeserving of it, of this moment, of him.

Vash smiles so wide that it threatens to split the earth beneath them.

“Did I just make you laugh?”

    Summary

It’s perfectly normal for them to split up in the heat of a skirmish; after all, a small and nimble target is harder to hit. And it’s equally normal for it to take a few hours for the dust to settle afterwards - and for them to find each other again amongst the wreckage of whatever has somehow remained standing.

But this…..This is far from normal.

In the beginning, in those first few days of frantic searching - Nicholas steadfastly refuses to believe that Vash could possibly be dead.

But it’s been two weeks, and hope is a fickle thing.

    Summary

Nicholas has survived countless brushes with death, he’s weathered storms that would bring even the most experienced gunmen unceremoniously to his knees and taken life so brutally and frequently that he fears any shred of humanity that may have managed to retain has long been eroded away.

But fear is a persistent mistress, and one who has not yet turned her back on him. And so Nicholas still feels fear, all-consuming as it claws savagely at his chest - but he does not fear the fight, and he certainly does not fear death. No, what he fears most, is the gray haze which lingers after; he fears the settling of the dust, and the hoards of ghosts which rise from corpses he leaves in his wake.

And when he looks at Vash now - his face void of emotions as glowing white lines paint his sun-bitten cheeks - he fears it more ferociously than he had in years.

Nicholas has always been so terrified of the aftermath.

Yo as an ace- usually long smut scenes bore me a bit but holy fuck this might just be the best one I’ve ever read- I’ve actually never locked in quite so hard. If I could only bookmark one fic ever- it’d be this one!! And omg it being ep 7 centric too is the absolute cherry on top of this masterpiece.
