Summary
It's the first real Dragonboat Festival Jiang Cheng has had since the end of Sunshot, and while it wasn't quite the grand festivities he'd remembered from his childhood, Jiang Cheng thinks that he hadn't done too bad this time around. Everything had gone smoothly, and the disciples and civilians both seemed to have a good time of it. It's safe to say that everything had been a resounding success.
But for all that it was a success, there's still something tugging at Jiang Cheng's heart, a small hollowness that turns his expression soft with melancholy.
He misses Nie Mingjue.

Nie Mingjue leans impossibly closer, his lips almost brushing the shell of Jiang Cheng’s ear and Jiang Cheng can’t help but to sway into the contact. Nie Mingjue is warm and reassuring and safe.
“Who did this to you? Who is responsible?” Nie Mingjue whispers and Jiang Cheng closes his eyes at the tightly controlled fury in his voice.
Jiang Cheng knows what they say about the Nie’s. They are butchers.

It’s not a rare occurrence because Nie Huaisang cries easily and often and for various reasons, so Nie Mingjue learned early on to read his tears.
And these, these are tears of pure rage.
“What happened?” Nie Mingjue warily asks, but he already knows that he’s not going to like the answer.
“Wei Wuxian,” Nie Huaisang spits out and clenches his hands into fists. “He dared someone to ask A-Cheng out. In front of our entire class!” He lets out a bitter chuckle. “Gods, you should have seen his face. He was so–hopeful, and then before the person could even tell A-Cheng the truth, Wei Wuxian barged in, laughing his ass off. ‘You should have seen your face, Chengcheng! You really believed it for a second’. He thought his fucking prank was so goddamn funny,” Nie Huaisang rages, the tears now flowing down his face and Nie Mingjue understands his pain very well.
“You can imagine how A-Cheng reacted to that.”

Summary
Jiang Cheng frequently deals with Nie Mingjue–on and off the battlefield–but he never thought that Nie Mingjue would just outright proposition him.
The letter in his hands speaks a different language though.
Jiang Cheng scoffs as he reads it again; Nie Mingjue makes pretty promises, that’s for sure, but Jiang Cheng has gotten enough offers over the course of the war to know they are empty. Even if Nie Mingjue means everything the letter says, Jiang Cheng knows it won’t last. The same man has found his way into Jiang Cheng’s bed before, but it never lasts and it never will.
At this point, Jiang Cheng knows better than to hope for anything more tangible than a quick fuck in the night.
