And even if it did occur to them, they wouldn't care enough to do it. World domination makes you late for tea. Bilbo isn't special compared to other hobbits and when none of the dwarves use power over the elements to make traveling easier, he assumes they're being all hardcore and he keeps himself from using it too to fit in. Then something happens and he ends up using his power to get rid of the threat in a moment of panic."
