Confused, Bob blinked at him. He hadn’t expected the man to address him unless it was absolutely necessary, but there was nobody else in the room he could be speaking to. Also, he didn’t understand the question.
“What suitcase?” He said, following up immediately in case he sounded like an idiot: “I didn’t bring a suitcase.”
John stared at him as if he had announced he had flown here directly from Mars.
“This is a six-week programme.” He said, slowly, in case Bob didn’t understand, “There’s no way you managed to fit six weeks’ worth of clothes into that thing.”
Bob shrugged.

At the same time, Ava muttered a similar sentiment under her breath but with a more colourful use of language. Until now, Bucky had kept his head firmly down and remained deep in his thoughts. From the second they stepped out onto that stage, in front of the press, it seemed like he was in a state of shock. But he finally raised his eyes to shoot Walker a stormy look. Whichever one of their reactions was effective, it didn’t matter, because something successfully shut John up.
They rode for a few more minutes in silence. Then, Alexei cleared his throat.
“Walker is right.” He said.
Without lifting his head, Bucky murmured to nobody in particular: “That’s a first.”

Nodding, Bob tried and failed to stop jiggling his legs incessantly. He didn’t even attempt to look at his therapist, instead staring at the piles of notes and paperwork on his desk. Absentmindedly, he wondered what the other clients who sat in these armchairs were like. Throughout the months he visited here, Bob never passed anyone else in the corridor. He did once share an awkward elevator ride with an older woman, but she exited at an earlier floor. Divorce lawyer, he realised.
“What was the question?” Bob directed his question at a pile of folders.
“Your mother.” His therapist prompted, “What were her depressive episodes like?”
“It was like… it was like she was somewhere else. She was just a… a husk.”

He thinks about how kind the team has been since he woke up here. His team is kind, sure, but this version of the new avengers is far more comfortable showing their feelings than his version. And then there’s the whole 'little' situation, which Bob is at least grateful that he wasn’t losing his mind about. But it makes him think—there’s a Bob out there that was comfortable being taken care of like a kid by the Avengers for a week. How different was he from that Bob?
Pretty damn different it seemed.

Once his mother was stable, the nurse told him, she would be admitted back onto the psychiatric ward. Then, his father had arrived, out of breath from rushing, and screamed at him in the waiting room about his stupidity. There was no way insurance would cover this, he said. Bob was useless…
No, I’m not like that. I’m not like her. I’m not. He was fine. Completely fine.
To tune the unpleasant reminder of his childhood out, Bob focused instead of the humming in his head. At first, he had thought it to be buzzing, the sound rising from a nearby hive of bees (why would there be a beehive in the middle of New York?). Listening closely, however, Bob was able to distinguish the words hidden within the noise. Deep inside of him, somewhere he wasn’t supposed to look, his duty was calling to him: becoming The Sentry.

She smiled at him in an attempt at comfort, straightening her posture to give herself some authority, or at least an air of confidence. He looked at her, and then the bomb, and then the guinea pig, and then behind him to the shadows on the wall. And then back to her.
“Okay,” he echoed, and she was pretty sure he had a bit less doom-and-gloom nothing-matters dejection in his expression now, so maybe she said something kind of right. Maybe.
“Great. How do you feel about wearing dead people shoes? The options here are slim.”
