Flashing blue and red danced over his features as he watched The High Visionary, no, Dillon, being loaded into the back of a police van.
Thomas couldn’t stop staring, the last two years of his life crumbled away from under his feat life the edge of a worn cliff face. As Dillon took a seat, and the cage doors were closed, stern ice blue eyes met with worried brown ones as the van doors finally slammed shut.
He blinked a couple of times, why were his eyes burning? He sniffed hard an composed himself as he seemed to come back into reality.

He used all the strength he could muster to move his eyes from the sky above and turn his head to the direction of the person running towards him. He was just about able to turn his neck to see a figure in silhouette turn the corner into the same street he was in.
He gambled.
On one hand it could have been one of Don Ciciccio’s men, on the other, it might not be.
“Please…” he managed to slur weakly as he forced a hand away from his head and reached out towards the stranger, his hands brushing against a soft fur jacket.

He swallowed thickly. How can it be cold and stuffy at the same time? He sighed, only now just realising how loud he was breathing, only now realising how rapidly his chest was rising and falling. He sniffed and swallowed again, closing his eyes once more.
At least his old room had windows.
He remembered seeing his garden, and the hole he dug, and the bird table and bird bath; and how all the different birds could visit and eat what they wanted and drink as much as they wanted.
Sparrows, Blue Tits- he giggled to himself silently-, Blackbirds, in the summer there were House Martins, Swifts, Swallows, Chaffinches, Greenfinches, Robins, Crows, Magpies and Jackdaws; He listed them all in his head; Once there was even a Sparrow Hawk. It swooped down from nowhere, causing a huge ruckus of squawking and chirping. He would watch them all year round; they would come and visit, and he adored it.But as quickly as they arrived they would soon fly off again, back to their nests, their homes, at least they could fly away and be free.

He walked up the path to the front door. His head was starting to pound now, he looked back to make sure there was no one behind him, not that there usually would be, but he couldn’t be too careful, he unlocked the door and stepped inside.
He listened carefully, Titch was still in his office, working; the faint, familiar clacking of the keyboard was a comfort to hear.
He sighed and crept to the kitchen and put the groceries on the table. The shock was definitely wearing off now, and suddenly, everything seemed to hurt.
