Summary
Viktor has never been particularly special, although he’s gotten lucky to survive as he is in District Twelve. He’s mostly known for his works as a town doctor and foraging, bringing herbs and fruits and vegetables from the woods and fish from the lake, trading to support himself and help the other orphans like himself. But every day of survival is overshadowed by the ever-looming presence of the yearly Hunger Games. He’s seventeen, now—all he has to do is wait a little longer, and then he’ll be free from the risk of being sentenced to death in the Arena. But Viktor’s carefully constructed plan to scrape by falls to pieces when twelve-year-old Jinx gets drawn in the Reaping.

Philip may be the only person who cares enough to brave the treacherous journey through the vast and horrific land before him, but that is not going to stop him from succeeding. His brother needs him. Any risk to his soul, any danger he faces, and any cost he may have to pay is worth it if only to bring his brother home safely. And if Philip has to depend upon the denizens of this damned land to find his way to his brother, then so be it.
