"Part of the small parlor was visible from here, and in it, James and Henry circled each other like imperious Egyptian cats. From one corner, face unseen, James was gesticulating with both hands, as if pressing a point, while Henry sat in the armchair next to the window: his arms crossed over his chest and his gaze fixed resolutely to the lawn. His jaw was set so tightly that it appeared he was trying not to weep."

Summary
Out on the shale, Francis Crozier sleeps with a failing James Fitzjames in his arms, lamenting time wasted and love unspent. Years earlier, a canoe capsizes and a newly-minted Commander of Her Majesty's Royal Navy is rescued from the freezing water. Francis has seen this before, but now he knows what happens next.
When Francis finds himself with the chance to relive some long-regretted unkindness, he grasps the opportunity to amend it. To give them a shred more of tenderness, a moment more of love.
