Since he presented at the age of sixteen, everyone has seen Kageyama Tobio as an Omega first, and everything else second—especially in the world of volleyball. From Alpha teammates who can’t take no for an answer to sports commentators and journalists who sing his praises only when first qualified by the statement of his secondary gender, Tobio’s never been spared from this unfortunate truth.
There is a singular exception to this rule. Oikawa Tooru: the one Alpha who will never acknowledge him as an Omega, who has only ever viewed him as a rival at best and an enemy at worst, whose interest in him stops as soon as they've departed from the court.

“Jean,” she says. “Don’t take this the wrong way, but are you, perhaps, jealous?”

He joins Jean at the archway, careful not to stand directly under the sprig taped to the top. “Mistletoe at a work party? Isn’t that some kind of HR violation?” he asks teasingly.
Jean sighs. “Eula asked Varka if she could put it up, and both of them were fairly drunk already, and I didn’t want to undermine him in front of everyone, and…” She gestures vaguely above her head. “And I’m sure you can fill in the rest.”
When Kaeya finds Jean cleaning up alone after an office party, a sprig of mistletoe offers them the opportunity to put some long-held misunderstandings to rest.

He blinks and pulls a smile onto his face, but it isn’t quite fast enough to conceal the pensive look in his eye, nor the echo of something that tastes like untapped potential and that Jean feels like a second pulse next to her own.
She swallows and looks away again.
It takes a wedding, a slow dance, and a long walk home to inspire Jean to action.

There were things Daiki did and said that finally had context, but he was no less himself than he’d been his whole life.
