He’s watching the entrance when it happens.
Because he knows. Somehow, he knows before it happens- before the hush spreads across the gilded room like spilled ink, before the whispers start like hexes barely restrained.
Then the doors open.
And Regulus Black walks in like he owns the entire Ministry. Like he never bled for either side. Like he never disappeared and came back from the shadows and smoke.
And on his arm, impossibly smug and sleek in black velvet, is Evan fucking Rosier.
James’s mouth goes dry.
Regulus is a vision- sharp cheekbones, tailored silk deep green robes, silver rings glittering like promises he’ll never keep. His hair’s lightly tousled, a few strands left to frame his aristocratic face in the kind of mess that takes effort to perfect.
But James isn’t looking at his outfit. He’s looking at the way Regulus clings to Evan. Fingertips just resting inside the crook of his elbow. Smiling, faintly, like the whole thing amuses him.
And worse- he keeps looking at James.
