He felt nineteen again – young, clueless and scared, full of hope that if he just tried hard enough, then everyone he cared about would be satisfied with him. Would love him like he wanted them to. Ilya hadn't thought something could still make him remember that old feeling. He couldn't stop to think about it, he wouldn't. Shane was not like them.

Ilya gets Moscow and Sochi flashbacks when moving to Ottawa doesn't go as planned. He's facing losing streak for the first time in his career, and he needs to confess to Shane that he can't function without him. But he was not taught to be weak and vulnerable.

Shane is speechless for a second. "Повтори, я не расслышал." He says slowly, also in Russian, with an awkward accent and a slight warning in his tone. Hayden stares at his best friend like he just grew a second head.

New Year holidays and wishes haven't been the same since he became twelve, but Ilya wanted to try and recreate that faint feeling he craved with Shane this year. He freed his schedule, bought decorations for the cottage and planned the activities for their short holiday, even fresh snow just fell from the sky — but today things turned out the way they did. Ilya could tell Shane felt guilty, so he reassured him it was okay to go and manage his career.
It was. It still is. Ilya is the one who is not okay.

Good riddance, he thinks. Or maybe feels obligated to think. He’s not sure. It feels like a natural thing to think about a brother who hit you and insulted you and extorted you for most of your short, miserable time together. He’s thought about it before, Alexei dying. The life he lived had not been conductive to longevity.
I am the last Rozanov, he thinks, and that is an emotion he can parse, finally: closure. Like setting the last piece down in a puzzle.
It’s only after the first puff of smoke escapes his lips that Ilya remembers Alexei’s daughter.
