    A messenger hawk practically fell from the sky and onto the deck. It croaked quietly in misery when a soldier scooped it up, its wings fluttering from exhaustion, feathers tipped in frost. The urgency that had driven the bird to fly beyond reason was immediately clear when the scroll was untied from its leg and slipped free from the oilcloth that had protected it from the elements – the wax seal of the head Fire Sage gleamed in the dying sunlight.

    “Dead.” Admiral Zhao stared at the scroll. The almost habitual smirk was gone from his face, and his expression was almost slack from the shock. “The Fire Lord is dead?”

    But a faction of careful observers approach with a problem: before Azula was defeated, she left Zuko mortally wounded, unable to complete the Agni Kai. The bending master who actually defeated Azula, the true Fire Lord by right of challenge…was Katara of the Southern Water Tribe.

    It was a brilliant plan, all things considered.

    On paper and in the eyes of the public, they were a charming if oddly mismatched couple who somehow found love despite their differences. A fairy tale come to life, sighed the more romantic members of Ba Sing Se society.

    So it was almost a shame that Katara's courtship with Prince Zuko was ultimately nothing more than an act - otherwise, they might have been a perfect match, if not the perfect partners in crime.
