The experience of slowly falling apart did not feel the way he thought it might. You would expect to sense your body crumbling into ash, going numb and shooting static through your veins in the way that a limb does when it’s fallen asleep. But no. It’s pure agony. He suffers through the disintegration process; he feels his blood turn into dust inside of him, before it starts attacking his nerves, then his bones, and finally his skin. Its progression only actually takes a few seconds to reach the last stage, but it feels like an eternity.

He whirled around and Heisenberg banged straight into his chest. He didn’t move. Face to face, he could feel Ethan’s breath hot on his skin. Chest rising and falling, each pant more strained than the last. Something electric tingled down Heisenberg’s spine.
“My wife… my kid… how could I have them if I wasn’t…”
He looked like he was going to cry again.
“My wife is dead, and I couldn’t save her. Rose is going to die and I… Do you think I wouldn't have done something if I was able to? If I had powers like yours?”
He began to sob in earnest, at the end of his rope. Heisenberg let him fall back against the wall and wail, balled fists clenching the side of his head. He was surprised to find his own chest clenching, a current of rage filling up within him. Oh he really didn’t know, did he?

“As you must know, supernatural creatures – which is an improper name only given to them by the general public, by the way – are, well. They were all once humans, having been transformed after coming in contact with what are labelled as mutagens, which includes viruses and parasites. Now, as for specters…” his wife continued. Was she still his wife? It didn’t feel like it. Would he have to divorce her now? Or was the fact that she had been presumed dead enough to consider them officially separated? “It’s a bit different. They have to specifically originate from a fungus; or what you’ve roughly identified before as ‘the mold’.”

Summary

He is hopelessly out of the loop, and the depths of the horror he uncovers only grow deeper as he finds the scene of a gruesome massacre, monsters, and a cult set on using the last broken pieces of his family to fuel their depravity.
