Kojiro has heard so many different things about being in love–people who have told him it’s the best, worst, most important, or most pointless experience he’ll ever have in his life. Grand fairytales which describe the emotion like floating on a cloud, and cynical dramas that paint a picture of a dagger through the heart.
Kojiro finds it is none of those things, at least not consistently. There’s no telling how he’ll feel about being in love from moment to moment, and the illness is equally unpredictable for that reason.
He thinks he’s supposed to regret being in love with Kaoru–regret he feels so strongly for someone who will never love him back that it’s killing him slowly–but he doesn’t. That’s the only thing that stays the same; Kojiro can’t bring himself to regret feeling anything for Kaoru. After all, Kaoru has been one of the most important fixtures in Kojiro’s life, and Kojiro sometimes thinks, late at night when he can’t block the dark thoughts out, he might as well be the reason for his death too.

Summary
“Bello,” Kaoru repeats to Kojiro’s immense dismay. “What’s it mean?”
Kojiro can’t very well tell Kaoru the truth, but he’s also quite aware of his inability to lie to Kaoru, so he blurts out the first thing that comes to mind.
“Friend,” he answers quickly. “Uh, best friend.”
Kaoru leans back a little. “Huh.” An unfamiliar expression flits across Kaoru’s face, and Kojiro panics.
“Sorry, sorry,” he apologizes quickly with his hands in the air. “I didn’t mean to say it, it just slipped out—” That part, at least, is true, but before he can continue rambling off apologies, Kaoru interrupts him.
“No, it’s…” He gives Kojiro an odd, sort of pensive look. “It’s fine.”
“It’s fine,” Kojiro repeats weakly. “It’s fine?”
Kaoru sniffs. “Better than the other nicknames you’ve given me, at least.”

“You,” Kojiro finally manages to wheeze out, “are not a better kisser than me.”
Kaoru’s face twitches. “How would you know?”
Kojiro’s laugh tapers off. He blinks at Kaoru. “Huh?” he gets out weakly.
“How would you know?” Kaoru repeats, the words slow and deliberate.
Kaoru is close enough that Kojiro can spot the faint smattering of freckles on his cheeks. When did Kaoru get that close?
“Um,” Kojiro says, praying that his voice is not as squeaky as he fears it is. “I, uh… I guess I wouldn’t know.” Kaoru is close and getting closer. Kojiro can feel his palms beginning to sweat. “What… what are you doing?”
“Letting you know,” is the last thing Kaoru murmurs before pulling Kojiro’s face forward and pressing his lips firmly against Kojiro’s.
