Like any good scientist, he's tried to be systematic about it, and divided things up by a set of variables. If his students had been here they'd've started up a chorus of groans, protesting emphatically. The thought warms him a little.
Metric one: Time.
Control variable: Nutrition.
Independent variable: Available entertainment.

A cry pierced the air. Grace felt his body jerk. That— that was Rocky's voice…
Was there a siren droning on somewhere? Some sort of alarm? Rocky shrieked, high and distressed, and—
"Ryland," someone was saying, urgent, the sound thrumming so deep inside that it seemed to sit in his spinal fluid. "Ryland!"
He jolted upright and was moving before his eyes opened. Cool air buffeted his face. Wet sand sprayed under his running feet.
He couldn't think. He could barely see, just a confused blur of brightness and color. The echo of a droning alarm faded. Nothing was more important than flinging his half-awake limbs towards that scream.Or: Grace isn't done processing his and Rocky's shared near-death experience above planet Adrian.

The story explores an alternate version of the Hail Mary Mission preparation in which Stratt does not keep Grace sedated. Forced to remain conscious through the medical procedures meant to prepare his body for three years in coma, Grace has to cooperate under fear, pain, and coercion. The story focuses on the psychological and ethical tension between violation and care, survival and consent, and the team’s attempt to keep him functional without pretending that cooperation means agreement.

That gets him to stop for a moment. He seems surprised that I noticed anything was off, as if I don’t notice every little thing about him. “Oh, uh—nothing,” he says. He shifts his weight from one leg to another. “I just gotta… you know.”
I don’t know, actually. But I know Grace well enough to recognize any one of his numerous anatomical tells.

I taste something metallic as a steady stream of thin mucus makes its way up my throat into my mouth. I swallow it down but I’m gasping for air, panting like I just ran a marathon.

“Leveled” - it’s a term I don’t recognize in this context, but I know the power of astrophage. The explosion would have been catastrophic. I can’t stop myself from warbling out a few nonsensical notes – shock at the news, sadness for the loss of those people, trepidation for what must come next, heartbreak for Grace. How well did he know them? How well did they know him?
