“I just wanted to be loved,” Tim chokes out.
The world stops.
His family freezes in horror.
Tim’s eyes burn, tears slipping sideways into his hair.
“Was that too much to ask for?”
No one answers.

Summary
Bruce is a mess when Tim first shows up. He's ruthless and relentless. Certainly not the Batman that Tim knows. So, Tim decides to step in. He'll become Robin. He won't replace Jason. That's something he knows he'll never be able to do. But he'll fulfill the need for a Robin.
Tim knows he's nothing more than a placeholder. Still, he wishes that Batman would accept him. He wishes Bruce would accept him. He can dream. He does dream. But he always wakes up. And he wakes up to a Batman that wants his son back.
Or: Tim fulfills the need for a Robin and takes the brunt of Batman at his worse. Later down the line, Bruce wonders if he'll ever be able to fix the damage he's done to Timothy Drake.

After months of isolation, Tim moves to San Francisco, leaving Gotham – and everyone in it – behind. He dives headfirst into his new start, even as his old life calls for him.

“He’s never gotten a chance to play with other kids before,” his dad had said as they sat at the kitchen table, “he hasn’t ever really played at all.”
“What?!” Jon had exclaimed, knocking over his glass of milk (which his dad caught), “Not even sports? Or-or board games? Or Roblox?!”
Jon couldn’t imagine a life without getting to play or run around in the backyard. Jon couldn’t imagine a life without his friends.
“Not even Roblox, buddy,” his dad had replied.
What a sad life Damian must have.
Or: Bruce wants Damian to have a normal childhood so he asks Clark to introduce him to Jon. This solves one issue and creates several more.
