“Hey, bud,” said Hayden slowly, not moving.
“Uh, do you want me to leave?” asked Shane, gesturing to his jacket, panic rising in his throat.
“What? No. No. Absolutely not. We were afraid you’d try and sneak out of here, so I grabbed your coat and keys,” explained Jackie.
“Oh,” said Shane, letting out a shaky laugh as he ran his hand through his hair. “Good call. I can’t say it didn’t cross my mind.”

The call hadn’t even lasted a minute, and somehow fundamentally changed the trajectory of his summer.Shane knew a lot about hockey, but not a lot about other things. But at this moment he thought about how his dad explained the butterfly effect. How the effect of a small thing could cause the outcome of a large thing. A butterfly flaps its wings and somehow contributes to a tornado.
(Or something like that, he doesn’t know, his dad was really into the movie when Shane was a kid, he thinks it had something to do with physics and chaos theory.)
He wondered if there was a small thing that led Scott Hunter to somehow summon a man onto the ice and passionately kiss him, that is now leading to Ilya Rozanov staying with Shane at his home for part of the summer.
A duck quacked and now Ilya Rozanov was buying a plane ticket or some fucking thing.

Yeah, maybe Yuna should have just responded to the frantic texts. But Shane never gave them any details about the people he was dating. This Lily seemed genuinely worried, and if a phone call would get her a better read on the girl, that would be a coincidence at best. Shane knew she preferred talking on the phone, and if she used her own phone, she’d avoid invading any more of his privacy.
She figured his current condition would be a higher priority to address than his mother calling the girl he was seeing. He’d be satisfied that his Lily would know how he was doing, and Yuna would be satisfied to connect with this girl who seemed to enchant his serious and stoic son. The phone rang twice before Yuna was sent to voicemail.
"Hi. This is Ilya. I will never listen to your voicemail."
Yuna may have miscalculated.
