Cursing, he turned around, looking back at the woods for the monster, seeing its shadow looming in the darkness. Mike immediately panicked, sprinting around the side of the house into the backyard, looking for a place to hide. He sprinted into the shed he had been in very peacefully with Will, just minutes ago, now trying and failing not to have a panic attack. He slammed the door, then lowered himself to the floor under the small table amid all the junk, hyperventilating. Mike tried to remain quiet as he heard the creature stalk around the Byers’ backyard, making terrifying growling and chittering noises. As he heard the noises get louder, the lightbulb in the ceiling grew brighter and brighter, the noises becoming deafening, mixing in his ears with the pounding of his heartbeat. It felt like everything was assaulting all his senses at once.
Then suddenly, nothing.

“You’re not healing,” he grumbles quietly. As though it were an annoyance. As though it were an incredible inconvenience he now had to address. Not the fate of my entire life.
He looks perplexed, but a faint smile pulls on my lips. My first real smile since I was taken, I realize. “I’m dying,” I surprise even myself with the words. And the shift in his pallor draws out a bizarre congested chuckle from my stuttering chest.

They bring each other lunch. They babysit Esme together. Everyone around them can see what they are, but neither Kara nor Lena will name it.
Everything shifts at the Foundation's inaugural fundraiser, when a guest looks at Kara and asks Lena, "Wait, she's not your girlfriend?"

Summary
From right above his head, Mike sees Bob’s mouth form a shocked little “Oh”, but all Mike can hear is the ringing in his ears. He gives up on controlling himself and wails into Bob’s shoulder.
Today, he watched his best friend forget everything that made him Will, stabbed him with a needle, saw countless dead and mauled bodies, and now the asshole responsible for trapping them here is telling him all of it was for nothing.
Or: Joyce and Hopper don't make it to Will's room in time. Now it's just Mike and Bob as they try to find there way out of the lab, and everything is about to go terribly, terribly wrong.
A season/series retelling diverging in S02E08 based on the idea that a possessed Will was meant to kill Bob, keeping the dark and horror tone of the first two seasons.
