“Who are you texting?” asked Guthrie.
Crowley smiled. “Apparently, the most optimistic heterosexual male in the state of Kansas.” He turned the screen to face him.
After a few moments, Guthrie's eyes widened. Then closed in resignation.
Crowley tilted the phone back towards himself, considering an emoji. Too much, perhaps. He deleted it and replaced it with a semicolon and a parenthesis, which felt charmingly 2007.
“Honestly,” he muttered, thumb hovering, “the man’s practically trussed himself up like a Christmas turkey.” He grinned. “It would be rude not to pick up the carving knife.”
