You didn’t know what prompted you to speak about this; out of all the things that you had drawn up to the forefront of your mind to talk to about Harry at this hour of night, this was the last one, but you found the words escaping you before you could reel them back, “when we were there, Edmund found a squirrel. He named it Patty. He cried when she died.”
Harry was quiet, then he said, “there was a day when we walked in a full circle. We didn’t even know it, but Ron insisted the trees were the same. He was right.”
You snorted faintly, and then murmured, "Weasley was right before Granger?”
“We let Ron navigate after that. Hermione never took on that role again,” was all Harry said, a note of amusement in his voice tinged with something you knew had to do with remembering the memory.
The silence settled, now peaceful, without weight. Your senses were already tracking Harry’s breathing, were aware of how his chest rose with each inhale and the little stuttering breath he took after eleven breaths, where he couldn’t get the usual supply of air and had to expand his lungs further to get it. It was a rhythm, a routine that calmed your mind and was enough to drag you to sleep.
