The thing was, Reuben got it. If someone had come knocking on his own door saying that Neil was under arrest, he would also not have been thrilled to welcome them in, no matter how official their badges and paperwork or how politely they introduced themselves. And he really couldn’t blame Ultika Verimor for freaking out at the mention that her son Zerako and his partner Maki — Bonehill, whatever — had been involved in a Beast incident. Again, he would have done the same thing. She was a parent, after all. He knew what that was like.
None of that made getting a face-full of coffee, being screamed at in said face, and then shortly thereafter briefly passing out feel any better.

It’s not the first time Zerako has seen snow, of course. (That time Bonehill fell asleep in the yard right before a blizzard and it took Zerako a day or so to dig him out afterwards comes to mind, among others.) But still, every time he sees this rain of frozen magic from the sky (and natural snow is at least as magical, in its way, as anything either of them can do themselves), it might as well be the first.
Bonehill slings an arm over the warming blanket already draped around Zerako’s shoulders, and bends to brush their heads lightly together in welcome.

“...Do you think pine cones are just bug hotels?” Zerako bursts out all at once, peering over Bonehill’s head towards the ground.
Bonehill leans his head further back against Zerako’s chest, eyes slitting half-shut in deep thought, and gives his husband’s relatively unexpected comment its due consideration. It is, Bonehill muses, an interesting philosophical question.
