Summary
It’s Atlas herself who really lets them know. Of course they can tell Shiro isn’t feeling well. He’s pale and distracted and more and more irritable. It’s enough to land him in the infirmary for a full checkup and another genetic scan to make sure that Galra medical technology really has cured him, but nothing shows up and he insists that he’s fine. It’s not really Curtis’s place to argue with him, but he wishes it was. Shiro needs someone to look after him, someone who isn’t at ‘Admiral Shirogane’ arm’s length, but he won’t let anyone close the gap, and just withdraws, wound tighter and tighter until the whole ship just sort of shivers in the middle of the artificial, spacegoing night, and switches on the emergency lights, but no alarms. Curtis sits up in his bed, and the door opens.

Ever since they lost those three years, Keith has been certain that Shiro is dead. He must be, he already didn’t have long before he lost out on the Kerebros mission. But when they finally touch down, there he is. He looks older than he should, his jaw is covered with rough stubble that he never would have allowed before, and his hair is shaggy and almost pure white, a little past his shoulders now, with only a streak of black left over one eye. He’s so thin it’s scary, and his strong right arm is an atrophied claw contracted over his chest, the hand settled like it’s holding his heart, but when he sees Keith he beams, the same radiant smile as ever, and he comes running over almost as fast as he used to, left arm pulling Keith into a rough hug.
