Summary
This fic takes place during the events of Feet of Clay. The book left me with a lot of questions and I was particularly curious about Drumknott’s perspective.
We all know Commander Vimes is more than capable of dealing with the Assassins’ Guild and that he feels the most alive when someone is trying to kill him. But after I played with a handful of ideas for this fic and struggled and almost abandoned it, I wondered if Drumknott might see things a little differently…

Vimes knows about stoker Blakes's identity and he cannot stop thinking about it. Vetinari is more than willing to give him more to think about.
"The room was horribly quiet which only allowed the memories of sounds on the train's steering deck to resonate in Vimes’s ears louder. Constable Visit told him some time ago about a man in the desert who could hear gods speak and had such a good memory that he never forgot a single detail and Vimes felt as if he temporarily borrowed this ability. He wanted more of those moments to remember. He took a deep breath.
“I know it was you.”
“So I gathered.”
Vimes glanced at his boss and noticed he was smiling."

Then his nose caught the very familiar whiff of strong alcohol in the air and the terrier within Vimes pricked his ears.
His hand wandered automatically to his sword handle while he slowly paced towards the desk and the light.
“Commander please don’t draw that sword of yours. It is unnecessary.”, the sudden quiet voice, he knew so well, gave Vimes such a fright that he instantly unsheathed the sword und made a jump.
“Damn, Sir”, he wheezed and tried to catch his rapid breath.
“What are you doing here … at this hour, Commander?”, Vetinari asked him and Vimes felt something odd about the way he spoke, but couldn’t put his finger on it yet.
“We had an appointment. I was to report to you on the pigeon network …“, Vimes answered confused and slightly irritated. Now that he had steadied himself, the anger was flowing back in its natural habitat, that was his mind.
“Ah, I see … I had Drumknott cancel my appointments … Ob…vious…ly the massage did not reach you .. in time”, Vetinari answered and Vimes knew now what he had found so odd.Vetinari is having a weak moment and his commander is ready to aid him, as always.

Summary
Fencing is one of the few things that has been suggested to Vimes by Lady Sybil which he has categorically vetoed. He has always been vaguely aware of the idea that exercise and adrenaline can be good for blowing off certain kinds of steam – and to be fair, throwing himself in the general direction of armed criminals had been almost as much of a recurring habit as the drinking prior to his marriage. He understands, hypothetically, why she wants him to give it a go. It makes a certain amount of sense. It's just that fencing is not, as far as he can tell, dangerous, and most of the techniques used seem far more concerned with showing off than with practicality.

Vetinari catches Vimes off guard with an invitation to fence with him on a slow day, and Vimes has a much better time of it than he was expecting. -

This is an arrangement they have had for a while. Vimes gave up drinking years ago upon his marriage to Lady Sybil, but the painful, self-destructive tendencies which drove him to seek sanctuary at the bottom of a bottle in the first place had been much harder to exorcise than the habit itself. Havelock, Sybil, and Sir Samuel himself all knew that Vimes needed an outlet for such feelings, and out of himself and Sam’s wife, it had been clear who was more able to provide one.
As such, Vetinari had agreed to help indulge some of Vimes’s… baser needs, to help keep that particular beast caged.OR:
