He watched Tim's face do the thing it did when Martha Kent was talking to him. The thing Tim would never in a million years describe out loud, but that Conner had always found quietly extraordinary.
"We don't actually celebrate Easter," Tim said, after a while. "It's— yes. Yes, I know that's not —" A pause. "I understand that. I do. But we have a whole —" Another pause, longer. Conner could hear Martha's voice, not the words but the tone, that of a woman who was not arguing but was being extremely clear about something. "I'm not— Ma’am."
Thomas, who had stopped pretending to build a rocket approximately two minutes into the call, was now sitting with his knees pulled to his chest, watching Tim with the specific attentiveness of a nine-year-old.
"Mama Kent?" Thomas whispered to Conner.
"Mama Kent," Conner confirmed, quietly.
