On a freezing desert night, a quiet walk between Monty and Sally turns from racing talk to deep healing. When a sudden trigger catches Monty off guard, a shared scent of citrus becomes the bridge to overwrite past trauma with a warm memory of home.

"How did you actually do it? In one night? You always shrug it off, but... really."
Monty looked down, suddenly feeling very shy.
"Oh, it wasn't a big deal. Just... some wiring."
"Monty," Sally said, her voice dropping into a more commanding tone. "Tell me."
He sighed, a meek smile tugging at his lips.
"Well...I had to practically beg Sheriff for his toolbox."
He chuckled softly, the gravelly sound echoing in the quiet street as he recalled the old lawman's stubbornness. He raised his hands in a mock gesture of surrender, his eyes sparkling with amusement.
"He didn't want to give it to me at first. I think he genuinely thought I was going to use a heavy-duty wrench to break myself out of the impound lot. But I promised him I wouldn't. I gave him my word."
Monty paused, his gaze drifting up to the buzzing neon sign of the hardware store above them. The warm glow cast sharp, colorful angles across his face.
"I spent the whole night out here," he continued, his voice softening. "It was freezing, Sally—honestly, way colder than it is tonight. And since I didn't have a ladder for the higher signs, I had to get...creative."
He pointed a finger up toward a narrow, rusted iron fire escape hugging the side of the brick building next to them, then traced a line along the shadow-draped concrete ledge.
"I had to climb up those rusted fire escapes and literally crawl along the ledges of the storefronts just to reach the main junction boxes."
Monty pulled his hands out of his pockets. He rubbed his palms together, the friction making a soft, scraping sound in the midnight quiet, as if he could still feel the phantom ache of the frozen metal.
"I had to keep pausing to breathe on my knuckles just so I could feel the fuses," he laughed, staring down at his hands.
Sally watched him, her heart swelling with an overwhelming ache.
She reached out, her gloved fingers gently brushing against his arm to stop his rubbing hands. Monty stopped, his eyes dropping from the neon to look directly into hers.
"But..."
He swallowed, his voice dropping into a whisper that was meant only for her.
"I knew how much the neon meant to you. I knew how much you wanted to see the way this town used to look when it was whole."
He took a step closer, closing the final gap of cold air between them.
"I just...I couldn't go to sleep until it was done."
Sally gazed at him silently. He spoke about it so casually, as if climbing frozen buildings in the dead of night with raw hands was nothing. But she understood. It wasn't just a kind gesture. It had been his way of screaming to her, and to the town, what he couldn't yet put into words.
"You're unbelievable, Montgomery."
"Just wanted to show you," he retorted, his eyes following hers.
As the quiet settled back over them, Monty’s smile faded into something slightly wistful.
"You know...I was really sad when the press found me that night. When the helicopters came."
He didn't mention the terror of being dragged back to the racing circuit, or the fear of being locked back into a room with that man. He only wanted to talk about what they had lost.
"We were walking down the street," Monty said, his voice barely a whisper. "Just like this. And I thought...I really enjoyed that moment with you."
