I must be some kind of moron not to have already bookmarked one of my favorite series on the internet. Likewise I must be some kind of masochist for choosing the following selection:
For no reason at all, Teddy’s heart lurched in his chest, then began to pick up speed. He slowly rose to his feet as the kid stepped inside and nudged the door shut. “Hey, sorry,” the boy said, and it was a sudden, fierce blow; all at once, there wasn’t enough air—he was gasping in a breath that wouldn’t come, body frozen, muscles screaming tight because, because, shit because he knew that voice. “I came as fast as I could. Am I late? I—”
And then Billy—Billy—looked up and met Teddy’s eyes and the words fell away as if snatched from his throat. He stumbled to a stop, brown eyes going wider and wider; Teddy could see the way he trembled where he stood.
He’d heard every cliché about how the world could go still, but this was the first time he really understood it. The muffled sounds of traffic died. The light seemed to freeze where it was, catching each individual mote of dust and making it gleam gold around them. The air vibrated with tension, and he couldn’t stop staring at Billy’s face, Billy’s eyes, the familiar dark tangle of Billy’s hair. Billy’s lips parted in surprise and his hands lifted as if torn between conflicting desires to reach for Teddy, to push him away.
Billy, Teddy thought, world spinning dizzily around him; Iron Lad and Eli might as well never have existed. Oh my God, of course, of course it would be you.

“You know,” Steve says, and his voice sounds only a little strained, “I read that in the Near East, it’s completely normal for men to walk around holding hands. Culturally, it doesn’t mean… It’s a sign of solidarity and kinship.”
“Yeah?” Bucky’s head is tilted back to see the top of the big Ferris wheel making stately turns above the water. He squeezes Steve’s fingers.
“So, I’m just saying, there might have been a different kind of cultural shift here in America…” Steve tells himself he’s just being a realist, but he’s starting to wonder what he’s trying to talk himself out of.
Bucky nods. “Okay.” He drops his hand from Steve’s and a protest is on Steve’s lips when the same hand slides across the small of Steve’s back. Bucky’s arm wraps around Steve’s waist.
Steve is startled by his own huff of laughter.
“What?” says Bucky, leaning away from him but not letting go. He sounds indignant.
“Nothing,” says Steve. “That was smooth.”
“Shut up,” Bucky says. “This is highly scientific stuff.”
“Is that how you got Louise Gibbons to go out with you? ‘Hey, Louise, lemme take you dancing—for science’?”
“Sure.” Bucky’s laughing now too. His body is warm against Steve’s. “’Louise, it is of great scientific importance that we neck for a while.’”
Steve snickers. “You’re a visionary,” he says. “A pioneer.”
“Yup.” Bucky steers them down some steps and over to the railing at the very tip of the pier. His arm shifts, tugging Steve closer. It’s an incredible feeling—that they’re eye to eye now. Steve can feel the warmth of Bucky’s breath as he leans in. “So,” he whispers. “You convinced yet?”
Bucky’s lips are really pink. Steve never noticed before now—he couldn’t. Whatever they did to his eyes has made the world so bright. Bucky has pink lips and copper in his hair. His eyes are the color of the ocean.

“That’ll throw them off my scent. Now we wait. Right, creepy eyes? Guess you’ll stand there staring all day, dumbass, as long as I keep saying velveteen.”
OVERRIDE
The mission imperative has a tone now. That tone is smug.
Barnes smiles – a slow spreading of his mouth until all his teeth are exposed, and the man’s mouth drops open. He’s twitchy and sweaty and wearing a shirt so cheap-looking Barnes would’ve passed it up in a dumpster.
“Velveteen,” the guy gasps.
OVERRIDE
Barnes breaks the zip ties with one slow wrist movement. The guy lurches for a weapon while Barnes retrieves his coffee and takes a sip.
“Aw, it’s cold,” he says.
The sweaty guy has a pistol basically pointed at him – or at least, shaking sort of in his general direction. Could be the safety is off. Probably not. The guy’s barely able to stand upright: he’s clearly an office drone with just enough knowledge to get in extremely big trouble.
“Hey pal,” he says to the guy in a soft voice. The voice slides naturally out of his throat, a purr that means violence. That means enjoying the pain of knuckles meeting jaw.
“Hey. Do I worry you?”
“Velveteen!”
OVERRIDE
“Doesn’t seem to be working anymore, friend.”
He steps forward, still smiling. The sweaty guy blinks reflexively, and the gun weaves a little dance hither and yon.
“I should worry you.”

“I am … really sorry, Steve,” Sam says.Rogers sighs.
“It’s okay.”
“No, it’s really not. This is what I do for a living, man. I should’ve used three or four brain cells before I opened my damn mouth.”
“Well. I shouldn’t have yelled at you.”
“Dude, I know people in the Air Force who would call that sweet talk.”
“Shut up.”
“Roger that.”
“Ugh!”
Well done, Sam.
“So the plane thing.”
“What do you want to know, Sam?”
“That was on purpose. Like the Helicarrier?”
“God. I don’t know. Yes? It just seemed like the right thing to do, and I didn’t mind it. Or I only minded it a little. I mean, what else was I supposed to do? Go home, marry Peggy, and name our first son James Buchanan Rogers? It would have broken my heart all over again, every day. It seemed so much easier to just be done.”
Rogers you shit.
“That’s not how grief works, Steve. People who are hurting don’t like to think it, but most of us are more resilient than that. They find a way to go on. They find a way to not re-break their own hearts over and over.”
“Well, it didn’t work anyway. I couldn’t even die right.”
“I for one am pretty glad about that. Along with most of New York. And your boy Barnes, seeing as how he seems to be taking out anyone who even thinks about threatening you.”
“Yeah.”
“Yeah. So maybe hold off on all the heroic suicide thoughts for a while, will you?”
“I promise. I have to get Bucky back, don’t I?”
“Wait a second. If he has you bugged, that means he can hear you, right?”
“That is generally how surveillance works, Sam.”
“Ever thought about talking to him?”
What
“What?”
“If he can hypothetically hear you, why not talk to him?”
Rogers’s voice goes deep, with a sound in it that makes Barnes’s stomach drop about 8 cm and inexplicably makes him think of … shoe polish? In his hair?
“Sam, that is a great idea.”

He’s been so busy patching up Potts that he didn’t notice takeoff, wasn’t bothered by the change in cabin pressure. So that’s a plus.Potts’s phone was damaged in their fall. It’s several minutes until Barnes’s phone rings, and the person on the line is Stark.
“I told you,” he shouts, “I told you what would happen, you son of a bitch, I will.”
“Stark,” Barnes says, again in that orders-giving voice, “I am handing the phone to Pepper, don’t you dare make her more upset by yelling at her.”
Stark actually squeaks.
“I’m okay, Tony,” she says, but her words bring tears with them, “it was some kind of bomb, I don’t even know. I got scared and almost set Barnes on fire. But he pulled some people out, and he wouldn’t let me walk, Tony, because I lost my shoes. Tony, I lost my shoes, I don’t have any shoes with me, can you send a car when we get home?”
Then she’s crying too hard to speak, so Barnes gently pulls the phone out of her hand while the crew woman hugs her.
“She isn’t hurt, Stark,” he says, “just some superficial cuts. She’s in shock at the moment, but we’re safe. We’re in the air already.”
“You got her out of there.”
“That was my job.”
“Yeah. Yeah. Okay. Call me if anything changes. I’m gonna go invent an airplane engine that goes faster.”
