Summary
The reality is; when two dissimilar substances contact, atomically and energetically, they mix into a composite. This mixture is not defined by its constituents alone, but by what new substance they have made and the energy expended / released in doing so. Sometimes this reaction is reversible and each original substance can be recovered, though usually not in their entirety.
