He had kind eyes, and his mien was nonthreatening. It couldn’t hurt to ask him to drop him off at the subway, right? He could perhaps beg enough change for a ticket to Joel’s place, without a chance of getting stopped by someone unsavory on the way. Pushing down the loudest of his misgivings, he said,
