“It’s all fucking Walter’s fault,” she admitted, almost spitting the name as if it was a curse. It wasn’t one Maggie recognised, but she didn’t need to ask who Walter was; once Jen had started, it seemed, she couldn’t stop. Something had come loose, now that she had someone to listen.
She blinked furiously, eyes reddening again. “I still don’t know why Mom married him, what she saw in him; he’s just such a fucking asshole, all the time.” Her hands shook, balled so tightly that her knuckles turn white. “He’s always given me shit, because I don’t like his stupid farm, and I can’t do numbers, and I’m not perfect to him like Andy is.
“And she doesn’t want that either; she’s told him to stop comparing us as many times as I have! But does he listen…?” She trailed off, her voice rattling hard in the empty air, but it didn’t matter. The conclusion spoke loudly enough for both of them.
When an unwanted package ruins her day, Maggie finds out her roommate has been hiding a lot of painful truths about her upbringing.
