Summary
The world and most of the ship were asleep, but his mind just wouldn’t shut down from digging at things. Vance agreed to allow McGee to use the MCRT to contact him where things could be recorded, yet McGee’s being so naïve in not knowing everything happening on that screen was watched by those on BOTH ends. His not knowing he had hung himself literally on treason charges after Tony’s captain had nodded his head and every key stroke was monitored that Tim had made. Stopping him just short of getting in. And Tim getting frustrated at it not working just before Pentagon’s security barged in to arrest him on treason charges.

Summary
Generally when I do Tony Afloat from Vance's orders I have it as a time where he is away from that toxic group to regather himself, but otherwise agree with you. - Me
Those are the ones I enjoy most, rather than the ones that Tony spends the whole time being miserable that he isn't back with the team. I did read one where instead of Vance doing it to punish Tony for Shepard's death, he contacted Tony on the ship and told him he did it to give Tony a chance to reflect on what he wanted for his career, that he was a good agent, but was tanking his career by staying on Gibb's team and wasting his time smoothing things over for Gibbs' behavior and blatant breaking of rules (and excusing Gibbs doing that to himself as "getting the job done") and that Tony had to decide if his loyalty was only for Gibbs or for justice for military personnel, and this was his wake up call. So he was giving Tony the choice when he returned, he could return to Gibbs' team or he could be moved to another team with an eye on eventually getting his own team. - ldorgan
