Summary
Shower time is Maeve’s favourite. Tears get lost amongst all the water, and faking a skin care routine meant Otis would hop in bed, breathe far too fast to actually be asleep and she’d do the same. Neither really wanting to have to be all alone together.
Otis’s feet hang off the end of the bed, she still smiles at his mismatched socks he wears to bed, even when his back is turned. It’s probably just as well, she hates the way he seems to be able to tell she’s been crying.
She slips into the sheets next to him, back to back. Unsteady breaths escaping both of them. She squeezes her eyes shut, wishes away the tears and focuses on their daughter in the next room, sleeping peacefully in the house with both her parents. Everything Maeve never had. Everything she ever wished for.

Otis asks Ruby to close her eyes, it's easier when he doesn't feel observed.
"I've only told a girl that I love her once, Ruby. And when I did, she stopped talking to me. It hurt. And now, I'm happy again. You make me really happy, but I'm terrified that if I let it get to that level again, I won't be able to move on from you as easy as I moved on from her. I don't think I ever could."
Ruby slowly opened her eyes. Otis wasn't looking at her, he didn't see her eyes getting wetter.
"I know that I need more time. And I'm really sorry that I've not been able to tell you, but if you'll have me I really do want to show you how much I care."
The room was silent, and Otis let it stay that way for just a moment, before:

Adam frowned, he could feel his throat tightening “I can’t cry, it means I am weak.”
Ola shook her head and tightened her hold on his knee “No Adam, it means the exact opposite. It means you’re not scared of your emotions, of facing them, of being a human being and of being vulnerable.”
He exhaled shakily, his vision was becoming blurry.
“And trust me, you feel better after a good cry”
He looked at Ola’s blurry face, he should really blink the tears away so they wouldn’t spill out of his eyes but he was exhausted. What if she was right? What if it was okay to cry? What if that was exactly what he needed? What if he did feel a bit better after?
