Alastair flips the envelope over and tucks his thumb under the flap. The most beautiful card greets him as he gently slides it out. Paper lace in soft white borders the edges, delicately cradling the centrepiece: a cut-out of a rose, petals in shades of pink and cream surrounding some green leaves. There is a collection of red and purple satin ribbons stuck in the empty spaces, neatly knotted into bows, as well as drawings of love hearts and flattened tissue paper shaped into tiny carnation-like blossoms.
Alastair frowns, utterly confused.
It’s not his birthday and Thomas is not senile to think it is. Christmas and New Year’s have just gone, so why has he gotten a card…?
A second later, it hits him.
Horrified, he rushes to the bureau in the corner and checks the calendar.
Wednesday the 14th of February.
Valentine’s Day.
Alastair swears loudly in Farsi and smacks his forehead with the card.
