The world looks different without her glasses to filter it—a little blurry, though AZI-3 cheerily informs her that her vision is perfectly within human standard, and shaded with an unexpected range of colors. She thinks that’s why her eyes keep slipping toward Senator Chuchi, at first. The rich, pale blue of her skin is like the sky in late morning, or maybe a few hours before sunset. Emerie changes her mind with each glance.
Before she took off her glasses, she had no idea how many hues the sky could hold.

"Oh, good," says Howzer as Echo and Emerie step out of the small, private training room off the main gym. "Was starting to think I was going to have to haul you and your girlfriend out of there. Do I need to clean the floor before I start?"
His waggled eyebrow is, Echo knows, meant good-naturedly. Echo rolls his eyes and pushes past, only to realize half a second later that Emerie isn't following him. She's standing frozen in the door.

Emerie finally agrees to let Echo teach her self-defense skills. She isn't expecting others to notice—or to leap to the wrong conclusions.
