Thanks for the clarification. The monetization is all too, I dunno, "influencer-friendly" for my comfort. Much to my dismay, it seems that much of the internet is headed in that direction.
I agree. I love the communal nature of fandom, people freely sharing their passion and taking inspiration from others. It's what makes fandom so creative and unrestricted. I don't want fic to become just another product we consume, rather than a gift to the community.
That the term "gift economy" can be applied to fandom is something that actually warms my heart. To write about characters you like for anyone else who also does, no profit motive needed! Maybe I'm just old, but it's really amazing to me how that seems to be lost on people now. I'm aware that some do commission fanworks, and I'm kind of iffy on that as it is, but outright paywalling? If I go on in any more detail, I'm going to catastrophize.
Ditto this! Of course it would be great if we could all be paid to do what we love, but the underlying implication that hobbies only have value if they can be transformed into "side hustles" is a sad reflection of how the internet has increasingly become a vehicle of global capitalism.
I agree. Writing and reading for the joy of words and stories, our favorite stories and characters, is more than enough for me. I won't be involved in this, and I think it is going to be a disaster waiting to happen for Tumblr.
